INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) has been described as early exhaustion with tiredness that develops during physical or mental activity and generally does not improve with rest. There are inconsistent findings on the relationship between the characteristics of the ischemic brain lesion and PSF. However, some studies suggest that specific neuroanatomical and neuroplastic changes could explain post-stroke fatigue. The aim was to evaluate the severity of PSF in relation to the location and the size of the ischemic lesion in acute stroke patients to establish possible predictors of PSF. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study to establish potential early predictors of long-term PSF, which was assessed using the Fatigue Assessment Scale six months after ischemic stroke. After segmenting brain infarcts on Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) images, we studied the association with PSF using Voxel-Based Lesion-Symptom Mapping (VLSM). RESULTS: Out of 104 patients, 61 (59 %) reported PSF. Female sex and history of diabetes mellitus were associated with a greater risk of developing PSF. The association of PSF with female sex was confirmed in a replication cohort of 50 patients. The ischemic lesion volume was not associated with PSF, and VBLSM analysis did not identify any specific brain area significantly associated with PSF. CONCLUSIONS: PSF is frequent in stroke patients, especially women, even after six months. The absence of neuroanatomical correlates of PSF suggests that it is a multifactorial process with biological, psychological, and social risk factors that require further study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of aspirin versus low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) for the prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and/or total hip arthroplasty (THA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Sixteen studies were selected. The risk of VTE, DVT and PE were analysed. Mortality, risk of bleeding and surgical wound complications was also analysed. RESULTS: 248,461 patients were included. 176,406 patients with thromboprophylaxis with LMWH and 72,055 patients with aspirin thromboprophylaxis. There were no significant differences in the risk of VTE (OR=0.93; 95% CI: 0.69-1.26; p=0.64), DVT (OR=0.72; 95% CI: 0.43-1.20; p=0.21) or PE (OR=1.13; 95% CI: 0.86-1.49; p=0.38) between both groups. No significant differences were found in mortality (p=0.30), bleeding (p=0.22), or complications in the surgical wound (p=0.85) between both groups. These same findings were found in the sub-analysis of only randomised clinical trials (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: No increased risk of PE, DVT, or VTE was found among patients with aspirin thromboprophylaxis versus patients with LMWH thromboprophylaxis. There was also no greater mortality, greater bleeding, or greater complications in the surgical wound found among patients with aspirin thromboprophylaxis versus patients with LMWH thromboprophylaxis.

This study evaluated the effects of glycoelectrolytic supplements on the performance, blood parameters, and intestinal morphology of piglets during the post-weaning period. In the study, a total of 240 piglets weaned aged 17 22.60 + 1.10 days were used. The control group (n = 120) received only water, and the treatment group (n = 120) received an oral glycoelectrolytic supplement diluted in water (0.75%) during the first three days after weaning. Feed intake, daily weight gain, final weight, feed conversion ratio, and post-weaning mortality were evaluated. On the third day after weaning, the blood glucose levels of all piglets were analyzed. Blood was collected from 12 piglets from each treatment group on day 3 after weaning for blood count analysis, and intestinal fragments were collected for anatomopathological and morphometric evaluation. Better feed conversion ratio (1.29) and higher consumption of liquids (0.639 L/day) were observed in the piglet group supplemented with glycoelectrolytes on day 3 after weaning (P < 0.05). The supplemented group presented a higher glycemic index (80.78 mg/dL), average corpuscular volume (67.35 fL), and average corpuscular hemoglobin (20.46 pg) than the control group (P < 0.05). The evaluation of intestinal integrity and the probability of diarrhea occurrence were similar between the groups (P > 0.05). Oral glycoelectrolytic supplementation can be an option for piglets immediately after weaning as it improves feed conversion and consumption of liquids, in addition to increasing blood glucose without the occurrence of diarrhea, thus reducing dehydration and energy deficit.

Progesterone (P4) has a pivotal role on female puberty attainment in most farm animals. However, there are no studies evaluating the effect of P4 treatment previously to boar exposure for puberty induction in gilts. Therefore, serum P4 concentration, estrus expression and reproductive performance after boar stimuli were evaluated in gilts intramuscularly treated with long-acting P4 before boar exposure. In Experiment I, prepubertal gilts received either 1 mL of saline (control) or intramuscular (I.M.) P4 treatment (150 mg, 300 mg or 600 mg; n = 6 per treatment). Serum P4 concentration for P4-treated gilts was greater than for control gilts for at least 8 d for P4300 and P4600 groups (P < 0.05), but greater until after 16 d only for those treated with 600 mg (P < 0.05). In Experiments II (prepubertal) and III (peripubertal), gilts received either saline (control) or 300 mg P4 I.M. and those showing estrus signs were artificially inseminated (AI), whereas gilts without estrus expression were culled. In prepubertal gilts (Exp. II), estrus expression rate did not differ (P < 0.05) for control (79.1%; n = 110) and P4-treated gilts (81.5%; n = 108). In peripubertal gilts (Exp. III), although estrus expression did not differ between control (77.6%; n = 106) and P4-treated (69.6%; n = 102) gilts (P > 0.05), P4-treated gilts presented longer (23.1 ± 1.4 days) interval from treatment to estrus expression than control gilts (17.1 ± 1.3 days; P < 0.05). In Experiments II and III, the proportion of culled gilts with ovarian structures consistent with normal estrous cycles, farrowing rate, and litter size did not differ between treatments (P > 0.05). In conclusion, I.M. treatment with 300 or 600 mg of long-acting P4 was efficient in maintaining high P4 concentrations in prepubertal gilts for at least 8 days. However, P4 treatment over this time interval did not benefit the reproductive performance of prepubertal and peripubertal gilts.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders in the general population. Our objective was to describe the cumulative incidence and risk factors of anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in a follow-up of young adults over a five-year period. This is a prospective cohort conducted in two waves. The first took place from 2007 to 2009, in which 1,560 young adults aged between 18 and 24 years were evaluated using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Subjects were invited to participate in the second wave, which wave took place from 2012 to 2014, where 1,244 young adults were evaluated using the MINI-Plus. Our findings showed a cumulative incidence of 10.9% for any anxiety disorder, 6.5% for generalized anxiety disorder, 6.0% for agoraphobia, 2.0% for OCD, 1.6% for panic disorder, 1.1% for social anxiety and 0.7% for PTSD. Being female and having had a depressive episode were risk factors to develop any anxiety disorder. We observed a high cumulative incidence of anxiety disorders in a population-based sample of young adults. Our data highlights the importance of the early identification of these disorders as this could lead to early illness detection, early illness management and a reduced burden of disease.

Bird migratory journeys are often long and hostile, requiring high energetic expenditure, and thus forcing birds to pause between migratory flights. Stopover sites allow migrants to replenish fuel reserves and rest, being crucial for the success of migration. Worldwide, the increasing accumulation of waste on landfills and rubbish dumps has been described to provide superabundant food resources for many bird species not only during the breeding and wintering seasons but also during migration, being used as stopover sites. Using GPS-tracking data of juvenile white storks (Ciconia ciconia) during their first migration from the Iberia Peninsula to the sub-Saharan wintering grounds, we uncover the effects of stopping en route on individual migratory performance. Particularly, we examine the benefits of stopping at artificial sites (landfills and rubbish dumps) when compared to natural stopover sites (wetlands, agricultural or desert areas) and explore the influence of anthropogenic food resources on storks' migratory strategies. Overall, white storks spent up to one-third of the migration in stopovers. We found that birds that stopped for longer periods made more detours, increasing migration duration by half a day for each stopover day. Stopping more often did not reflect on increasing in-flight energetic efficiency nor the likelihood of completing the migration. Juvenile storks used artificial sites in 80 % of the stopover days, spending 45 % less time and 10 % less energy foraging than when using natural stopovers. While stopping in landfills did not translate into differences in migratory performance, individuals in poor body condition possibly rely on these sites to improve body weight before proceeding, enabling them to successfully complete migration. Artificial stopover sites are attractive and likely increase the number and duration of stops for white storks. Even though the consequences of arriving late at the wintering grounds are unknown, it can lead to cascading consequences, influencing individual fitness and population dynamics.

RESUMO

Addiction to psychostimulant drugs, such as cocaine, D-amphetamine, and methamphetamine, is a public health issue that substantially contributes to the global burden of disease. Psychostimulant drugs promote an increase in dopamine levels within the mesocorticolimbic system, which is central to the rewarding properties of such drugs. Cannabinoid receptors (CB1R and CB2R) are expressed in the main areas of this system and implicated in the neuronal mechanisms underlying the rewarding effect of psychostimulant drugs. Here, we reviewed studies focusing on pharmacological intervention targeting cannabinoid CB1R and CB2R and their interaction in the modulation of psychostimulant responses.

A 63-year-old caucasian male with history of tonsil cancer, under induction chemotherapy, reported food intolerance and vomiting with duration of one month. Symptoms had increased over the last days and were associated with a weight loss of 10 Kg during the past three months. The patient lived all of is life in an urban environment. General physical examination revealed cachexia and dehydration. Gastrointestinal symptoms persisted despite intravenous pantoprazole, prokinetic drugs and nasogastric tube insertion. On investigation, patient presented normocytic and normochromic anemia (9.2 g/dL), lymphocytosis (11.78 x109/L) with neutrophilia (70.7%) and eosinophilia (7.7%), hypoalbuminemia (2.8 g/dL) and elevated C-reactive protein (25.5 mg/dL). Upper endoscopy revealed deformation of bulb and second part of the duodenum with mucosal edema, superficial ulceration and friability (Figure 1a). Biopsies were taken from the bulb and second portion of the duodenum. Computer tomography demonstrated gastric distention, duodenal wall thickening and lumen narrowing in the second and third portion of the duodenum (Figure 2). These findings were indicative of a functionally relevant duodenum stenosis. Histopathologic evaluation of biopsy specimens from the duodenum revealed moderate accumulation of eosinophilic granulocytes and nematode larvae within mucosal crypts (Figure 1b). BACKGROUND: Using sulfated polysaccharides (SP) in fish sperm freezing medium promotes cell maintenance. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of different SP concentrations, extracted from two seaweeds (Gracilaria domingensis and Ulva fasciata), as a supplement to the sperm freezing medium of Prochilodus brevis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five semen pools were diluted in a solution composed of 5% glucose, 10 % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and different SP concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 mg/mL). The samples were cryopreserved and, after 7 days, rewarmed and analyzed for morphology, plasma membrane integrity, DNA integrity, mitochondrial activity and sperm kinetics [total motility, progressive motility, curvilinear velocity (VCL), straight line velocity (VSL), average path velocity (VAP), linearity (LIN), and wobble (WOB)]. RESULTS: There was no interaction between seaweed and SP concentrations. Similar effects were observed with SP extracted from the two seaweeds, regardless of concentration. When comparing the SP concentrations, regardless of the seaweed, 1.0 mg/mL SP showed better results for VCL and VSL. For VAP and WOB, 1.0 mg/mL SP showed better results, but differed from 3.0 mg/mL. LIN followed the same pattern, but differed from SP at 2.5 and 3.0 mg/mL. For progressive motility, 1.0 mg/mL G. domingensis showed superior results compared to the control. For mitochondrial activity, G. domingensis was superior to U. fasciata, regardless of concentration. The lowest concentrations (0.5 and 1.0 mg/mL) showed the best results, regardless of the seaweed. However, the control was superior to all treatments tested. The utilization of antimicrobials in animal production, causes selection of resistant bacteria. The objective of this study was to compare the utilization of alternatives in association with preventive antibiotic therapy in swine feed during the growing and finishing phases. 1,045 animals were used from 60 to 190 days of age and were subjected to six treatments with 16 repetitions as follows: 1) antibiotic free; 2) antibiotics; 3) prebiotic; 4) probiotic; 5) essential oils; and 6) organic acid. Animals were weighted, and clinical history was recorded including mortality and diarrhea. At the abattoir, pneumonia index and gastric ulcers were investigated. The cost for each treatment was discussed. No difference between treatments were observed (P>0.05) regarding feed conversion rate (2.64±0.03), overall average weight gain (107.06±0.9kg), average daily weight gain (856.49±7.7g) and carcass weight (92.4±0.7kg). The application injectable drugs in animals presenting clinical symptoms, represented US$ 0.56/intervention, without difference between the treatments (P>0.05). Furthermore, independently of the treatment, high frequency of pneumonia was observed (>0.90). No difference for the degree of gastric ulcer nor feces consistency were observed (P>0.05). The utilization of antibiotic therapy and alternatives to antibiotics in feed did not produce benefits to the production indices and sanitary performances of the animals.(AU)


A utilização de antimicrobianos na produção animal provoca seleção de bactérias resistentes. O objetivo do estudo foi comparar a utilização de alternativas associadas à antibioticoterapia preventiva na alimentação de suínos nas fases de recria e de terminação. Foram utilizados 1.045 animais de 60 a 190 dias de idade, submetidos a seis tratamentos com 16 repetições, como segue: 1) sem antibióticos; 2) com antibióticos; 3) prebióticos; 4) probióticos; 5) óleos essenciais; e 6) ácidos orgânicos. Os animais foram pesados, e a história clínica foi registrada, incluindo mortalidade e diarreia. No abatedouro, foram investigados índices de pneumonia e úlceras gástricas. O custo de cada tratamento foi discutido. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05) em relação à taxa de conversão alimentar (2,64 ± 0,03), ao ganho de peso médio geral (107,06 ± 0,9kg), ao ganho de peso médio diário (856,49 ± 7,7g) e ao peso de carcaça (92,4 ± 0,7kg). A aplicação de medicamentos injetáveis em animais com quadro clínico representou US$ 0,56/intervenção, sem diferença entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Além disso, independentemente do tratamento, foi observada alta frequência de pneumonia (>0,90). Não foi observada diferença para o grau de úlcera gástrica nem na consistência das fezes (P>0,05). A utilização de antibioticoterapia e de alternativas aos antibióticos na ração não trouxe benefícios aos desempenhos zootécnico e sanitário dos animais.(AU)

CSPEC is the cold chopper spectrometer of the European Spallation Source (ESS) and will come online with the ESS beam on the target. CSPEC will be the first cold chopper spectrometer on a long pulsed spallation source, which provides great opportunities in terms of signal to noise and novel measuring schemes. We provide a detailed overview of the instrument, scientific design considerations, and engineering requirements.

This work aimed to assess the effect of the probiotic strain, Lactobacillus plantarum, on the levels of leptin, IGF-1 and their receptors on the hepatopancreatic tissues of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and then correlate fish growth performance and gut microbiological parameters. Fish juveniles (±23g) were reared in a recirculation system with constant aeration and temperature (25°C). They were distributed into six polyethylene tanks (45L) and fed twice a day at 5% of the tank biomass with the respective diets: control (commercial diet without probiotic) and supplemented with L. plantarum inoculum (1 x 108 CFU mL-1), both in triplicate. After 30 days of feeding, L. plantarum-fed fishes showed greater weekly growth rate, final weight, and feed conversion rate, in addition to higher count of lactic-acid bacteria and lower count of pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract, when compared to the control group. The immunostaining intensity for IGF-1 and leptin hormones was lower after L. plantarum supplementation than in the control group, with no change in the level for receptors. This reduction could implicate important changes in fish metabolism and homeostasis.(AU)


O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da cepa probiótica Lactobacillus plantarum sobre os níveis de leptina, IGF-1 e seus receptores no tecido hepatopancreático de tilápia-do-nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) e correlacionar com o desempenho zootécnico e os parâmetros microbiológicos intestinais dos peixes. Juvenis de tilápia-do-nilo (±23g) foram distribuídos em seis tanques de polietileno (45L) conectados a um sistema de recirculação, com aeração e temperatura constantes (25°C). Os peixes foram alimentados duas vezes ao dia, a 5% da biomassa do tanque, com as respectivas dietas: controle (dieta comercial sem probiótico) e suplementada com L. plantarum (1 x 108 UFC mL-1), ambas em triplicata. Após 30 dias de cultivo, os peixes alimentados com L. plantarum apresentaram maiores ganho de peso semanal, peso final e conversão alimentar, bem como maior contagem de bactérias ácido-láticas e menor contagem de bactérias patogênicas no trato intestinal das tilápias alimentadas com dieta probiótica, em comparação ao grupo controle. A intensidade da imunomarcação para os hormônios IGF-1 e leptina foi menor com a suplementação de L. plantarum do que no grupo controle, sem alterar os níveis de seus receptores. Essa redução pode implicar mudanças importantes no metabolismo e na homeostase dos peixes.(AU)

1. This study evaluated photohydroionisation efficiency on the disinfection of new shavings used as substrate for litter in the poultry industry, pre-inoculated with bacterial, fungal and viral agents.2. Each replicate consisted of 250 g of new shavings sterilised by autoclaving, challenged with bacterial (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica, serovar Abony), fungal (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and viral inoculum (Gumboro disease virus). The experiment consisted of six replicates at four times (0, 1, 5 or 10 min exposure) of photohydroionisation. The disinfection process was performed in a bench photohydroionisation device with four ultraviolet lamps. The agents inoculated in the shavings were analysed after the disinfection process.3. The counts of enterobacteria and total bacteria showed a quadratic effect. In contrast, the counts of fungi and viruses showed a negative linear effect with an increase in the time of photohydroionisation. The enterobacteria showed a linear response plateau effect (LRP), with a minimum time point of 5.498 minutes at a minimum contamination of 0.666 CFU/g and a reduction of 82.27% of the pre-established inoculum. Total bacteria had an LRP effect with a minimum time point of 1.902 minutes at minimum contamination of 1.739 CFU/g and a reduction of 50.0% of the pre-established inoculum. An LRP effect was found for fungi, with a minimum time point of 7.931 minutes in minimum contamination of 3.380 CFU/g, and with a reduction of 11.0% of the pre-established inoculum. For viruses, there was an LRP effect with a minimum time point of 5.012 minutes in minimum contamination of 0.000 viral titre per 100 g of shavings, which was reduced by 100% of the pre-established inoculum.4. Photohydroionisation in the disinfection of new shavings used as poultry litter has partial potential as a microbiological control tool, as a complete reduction occurred only for the viruses, whereas for bacteria and fungi only partial reductions of these microorganisms were observed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate swine females of different genetic lines submitted to different reproductive management and housing systems during pregnancy on reproductive performance and animal welfare parameters. After artificial insemination protocol, 524 females were divided into two gestation housing systems: PEN1=animals housed in individual stalls during the breeding and after group-housed; PEN32=animals housed in individual stalls from breeding until 32 days of pregnancy and after group-housed. The number of piglets born, and the pregnancy and farrowing rates were evaluated. Welfare parameters related to the pregnancy phase were used. Females who weaned more piglets in the previous farrowing had a higher number of piglets born at the next farrowing. The pregnancy rate was affected by the number of semen doses. The farrowing rate was not influenced by the evaluated parameters, with average value of 91.36%. There was no effect of the gestation housing system and the genetic lines on pregnancy and farrowing rates, with values above 90.0%. The animal welfare indicators showed more compromised parameters in PEN1 system. PEN1 system did not impair the reproductive performance although it presented more compromised animal welfare parameters.(AU)


O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar fêmeas suínas de diferentes linhagens genéticas submetidas a diferentes sistemas reprodutivos de manejo e alojamento durante a prenhez sobre parâmetros de desempenho reprodutivo e bem-estar animal. Após o protocolo de inseminação artificial, 524 fêmeas foram divididas em dois sistemas de alojamento de gestação: PEN1=animais alojados em baias individuais durante o protocolo de inseminação artificial e, depois, alojados em grupo; PEN32=animais alojados em baias individuais desde o protocolo de inseminação artificial até 32 dias de prenhez e, depois, alojados em grupo. O número de leitões nascidos e as taxas de prenhez e parto foram avaliados. Parâmetros de bem-estar relacionados à fase gestacional foram utilizados. As fêmeas que desmamaram mais leitões no parto anterior tiveram um maior número de leitões nascidos no próximo parto. A taxa de prenhez foi afetada pelo número de doses de sêmen. A taxa de parto não foi influenciada pelos fatores avaliados, com valor médio de 91,36%. Não houve efeito do sistema de alojamento gestacional e das linhas genéticas sobre as taxas de prenhez e parto, com valores acima de 90,0%. Os indicadores de bem-estar animal mostraram parâmetros mais comprometidos no sistema PEN1. O sistema PEN1 não prejudicou o desempenho reprodutivo, embora tenha apresentado parâmetros de bem-estar animal mais comprometidos.(AU)

Climate change is predicted to severely impact interactions between prey, predators and habitats. In Southern Europe, within the Mediterranean climate, herbaceous vegetation achieves its maximum growth in middle spring followed by a three-month dry summer, limiting prey availability for insectivorous birds. Lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) breed in a time-window that matches the nestling-rearing period with the peak abundance of grasshoppers and forecasted climate change may impact reproductive success through changes in prey availability and abundance. We used Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a surrogate of habitat quality and prey availability to investigate the impacts of forecasted climate change and extreme climatic events on lesser kestrel breeding performance. First, using 14 years of data from 15 colonies in Southwestern Iberia, we linked fledging success and climatic variables with NDVI, and secondly, based on these relationships and according to climatic scenarios for 2050 and 2070, forecasted NDVI and fledging success. Finally, we evaluated how fledging success was influenced by drought events since 2004. Despite predicting a decrease in vegetation greenness in lesser kestrel foraging areas during spring, we found no impacts of predicted gradual rise in temperature and decline in precipitation on their fledging success. Notwithstanding, we found a decrease of 12% in offspring survival associated with drought events, suggesting that a higher frequency of droughts might, in the future, jeopardize the recent recovery of the European population. Here, we show that extreme events, such as droughts, can have more significant impacts on species than gradual climatic changes, especially in regions like the Mediterranean Basin, a biodiversity and climate change hotspot.

1. In this study, classical and molecular microbiological methods for detection and quantification of Campylobacter spp. were used to estimate their prevalence in faecal samples and skin swabs collected from 31 broiler flocks (20 farms) in Portugal, and measure the impact of transport-related factors on the expected rising excretion rates from the farm to the slaughterhouse. 2. Data on husbandry practices and transport conditions were gathered, including time in transit, distance travelled or ante-mortem plant-holding time. 3. A generalised linear mixed model was used to evaluate the significance of a potential post-transport rise in Campylobacter spp. counts and to assess risk determinants. 4. At least one flock tested positive for Campylobacter spp. in 80% of the sampled farms. At the slaughterhouse, Campylobacter spp. were detected in all faecal samples, C. jejuni being the most commonly isolated. 5. A post-transport rise of Campylobacter spp. counts from skin swabs was observed using classical microbiological methods (from a mean of 1.43 to 2.40 log10 CFU/cm2) and molecular techniques (from a mean of 2.64 to 3.31 log10 genome copies/cm2). 6. None of the husbandry practices or transport-related factors were found to be associated with Campylobacter spp. counts. 7. This study highlights the need for more research to better understand the multi-factorial nature of Campylobacter spp., a public health threat that was found to be highly prevalent in a sample of Portuguese poultry farms.

Introdução: As doenças cardiovasculares são a principal causa de óbito no mundo e geram um importante impacto econômico. Hipertensão arterial, diabetes mellitus, dislipidemia, tabagismo e obesidade são os fatores de risco modificáveis mais implicados no aparecimento de infarto agudo do miocárdio (IAM) e acidente vascular encefálico (AVE). A variabilidade nas medidas de parâmetros cardiovasculares tem surgido nos últimos anos como novo fator de risco cardiovascular. Nesse contexto, estudos têm mostrado que uma maior variabilidade de colesterol ligado à lipoproteína de baixa densidade (LDL-C) e colesterol ligado à lipoproteína de alta densidade (HDL-C) está associada com piores desfechos cardiovasculares. Entretanto, nenhum estudo até o momento avaliou o grupo específico de pacientes submetidos à cirurgia de revascularização miocárdica (CRM). Assim, elaborou-se este estudo com o intuito de avaliar se uma maior variabilidade nas medidas de LDL-C e HDL-C em pacientes submetidos à CRM está associada com eventos cardiovasculares maiores, definidos como: IAM não fatal, AVE não fatal, hospitalização por insuficiência cardíaca, hospitalização por angina, nova revascularização (cirúrgica ou percutânea) e morte. Métodos: A população do estudo foi composta de uma coorte de pacientes que foram submetidos à CRM isolada, no período 01 de janeiro de 2012 a 31 de dezembro de 2012. A variabilidade de LDL-C e HDL-C será avaliada por três índices: desvio padrão, coeficiente de variação e variabilidade corrigida independente da média. Resultados: Dos 568 pacientes submetidos à CRM isolada em 2012, 34 pacientes foram a óbito ainda na mesma internação. Também foram excluídos do estudo 50 pacientes que só tiveram uma coleta, e 133 pacientes que não tiveram nenhuma coleta de lípides séricos no período de seguimento, restando 351 pacientes que foram incluídos. Durante o período de seguimento, os pacientes incluídos tiveram total de 2090 coletas de lípides, sendo a média 5,9 coletas. No total, 46 pacientes tiveram somente 2 coletas, e um paciente teve o número máximo de coletas (18). Na primeira medida após a alta hospitalar, o valor médio de colesterol total foi de 155,7 mg/dL, 84,7 mg/dL para LDL-C, 41,8 mg/dL para HDL-C e 152 mg/dL para triglicerídeos. As análises de variabilidade estão sendo realizadas. Conclusão: Espera-se avaliar se uma maior variabilidade nas medidas de LDL-C e HDL-C em pacientes submetidos à CRM está associado com eventos cardiovasculares maiores.

INTRODUÇÃO: As doenças cardiovasculares estão entre as principais causas de mortalidade global e, dentre elas, destaca-se a doença arterial coronariana (DAC), cujo diagnóstico precoce e prevenção ainda continuam sendo a melhor forma de tratamento. O conhecimento do perfil clínico e angiográfico dos pacientes portadores de DAC é extremamente importante para a avaliação de risco, a partir da quantificação da extensão e gravidade da doença, assim como para o planejamento terapêutico e sucesso do tratamento. O nosso objetivo foi avaliar o perfil clínico e angiográfico dos pacientes submetidos a exame diagnóstico de cineangiocoronariografia em centro clínico de alto volume. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo e descritivo do perfil clínico-angiográfico dos pacientes >18 anos submetidos à cineangiocoronariografia diagnóstica no Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia de janeiro de 2011 a dezembro de 2018, excluindo os pacientes com cirurgia de revascularização prévia e doença valvar associada. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de um banco de dados institucional. RESULTADOS: Um total de 25649 pacientes foram incluídos, sendo 59,4% do sexo masculino, com média das idades de 66,1 anos. Os fatores de risco cardiovasculares mais frequentemente encontrados foram: hipertensão arterial sistêmica (80,5%), dislipidemia (60,5%), diabetes mellitus (32,3%), tabagismo (40,9%), e doença renal crônica (21,5%). O quadro clínico era de angina estável em 32,5%, síndrome coronariana aguda (SCA) sem supra de ST em 20,4% incluindo SCA com supra de ST em 6,1%, e isquemia silenciosa/assintomáticos em 37,5%. Em relação ao perfil angiográfico, a doença arterial coronariana obstrutiva significativa (>50%) foi uni-, bi- ou tri arterial em, respectivamente, 25,7%, 17,5% e 12,22%, além do tronco da coronária esquerda em 1,4%. A partir do exame diagnóstico, a intervenção coronária percutânea (ICP) foi realizada em 14,7% dos pacientes, predominantemente naqueles com apresentação clínica de SCA. Os vasos coronários tratados mais frequentes foram descendente anterior em 40,9%, coronária direita em 29,5% e circunflexa em 23,2%. O sucesso angiográfico foi evidenciado em 99,2% dos casos. Em relação aos desfechos clínicos na fase intra-hospitalar, foi reportado a ocorrência de óbito em 0,3% dos pacientes. CONCLUSÃO: A população estudada apresentou elevada prevalência de fatores de risco cardiovasculares e de doença coronária obstrutiva significativa. Já os pacientes submetidos a ICP subsequente, apresentaram elevada taxa de sucesso no procedimento. (AU)

Mercury is a toxic element that becomes a problem when present at high concentrations in soils. Mercury toxicity in soils varies depending on chemical species, concentration, exposure routes, and organism vulnerability. There is little information regarding the toxicity of Hg in tropical soils, especially for establishing safe levels of this pollutant. The purpose of this study was to investigate Hg concentrations in two tropical soils and their effect on oats and common beans, as well as on soil biological attributes. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, following ISO 11.269-2 and OECD-208 guidelines. Oat and common bean were cultivated in a Typic Hapludox (TyHpx) and Rhodic Acrudox (RhAcx) contaminated with HgCl2 at the following concentrations: 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0, and 80.0 mg of Hg kg-1 of dry soil. The biological variables analyzed were seedling emergence, vegetative growth, chlorophyll content (SPAD index), gas exchange (photosynthetic rate, internal CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance), and Hg concentration and accumulation in shoot dry matter. Microbial biomass carbon, soil basal respiration, and metabolic quotient (qCO2) were also analyzed. Due to the sorptive characteristics of TyHpx, it had higher Hg concentrations than RhAcx. Mercury showed toxic effects on both oat and common bean species. However, common bean was affected only at concentrations higher than 20 mg kg-1. The microbial community showed high sensitivity to soil Hg concentrations, but external factors, such as the plant species cultivated, influenced the sensitivity of the community. The microbiota was most sensitive in pots with common bean, and this effect was more pronounced at low clay and low organic matter contents (TyHpx). In this study, the concentration of 0.36 mg kg-1 was critical for Hg in these soils, based on its deleterious effects on oat and common bean and on biological soil attributes.
